HISTORY
It was back In the 1950’s when young Dr. Maurer learned that the surface of the skin has a protective layer called the “acid mantle“; the layer that protects us from outside influences such us pollutants, bacteria UV rays, etc.
While treating patients with skin diseases such as eczema, he observed that soap stripped away this protective layer. In fact, before sebamed® was commercialised, it was common practice not to bathe eczema patients with ordinary soap and water so as not to exacerbate their irritated skin condition.
The acid mantle has a slightly acidic pH value of 5.5. As such, Dr. Maurer developed the first commercial soap-free cleansing bar adjusted to pH5.5. This physiological alkali-free cleanser was found to be beneficial by not distressing normal or eczema skin.
